Field Notes
On the Signature Surface
A note on what it means for a formulation to remain in circulation without becoming fixed.
A signature formulation does not remain because it is static. It remains because it continues to hold under repeated return. What persists is not the impression of permanence, but the ability to remain legible across time.
To keep a formulation in circulation is not to freeze it into symbolic importance. It is to allow it to continue functioning as part of the house’s present surface without requiring explanation each time it is encountered.
This makes continuity less theatrical than it appears. A signature is not an announcement. It is a repeated confirmation that the work still holds.
